All about VPS Web Hosting
The term Virtual Dedicated Sever or Virtual Private Server (VPS) refers to a virtual machine that is used for hosting files in a web hosting service. Although a VPS system has characteristics of both shared hosting and dedicated hosting, it differs from both. Even though, VPS web hosting has a dedicated virtual machine for a user like dedicated hosting, the software is independent of the underlying hardware. Similarly, though the virtual machine runs in software on the same physical machine as other clients’ virtual machines, it is functionally equivalent to a dedicated physical system.
A VPS is dedicated to just one customer’s needs and hence, has the privacy of a separate, dedicated physical computer even though it shares the hardware. More and more companies are now offering users virtual private server web hosting as an extension to other web hosting services. However, this type of service is not without its challenges. In multi-tenant virtual environments, there are several challenges while licensing proprietary software. The hosting in a VPS can be unmanaged (the customer manages the server on their own) as well as unmetered (there is no limit on the amount of data transfer). A dynamic VPS is known as a cloud server, which is an extremely popular mode of web hosting.
